Four individuals from different walks of life, who are all searching for something, joined an adventuring guild and teamed up for an escort mission. They were tasked with transporting a wagon to the town of Phandalin. When morning arrived, the wagon was missing, and they decided to check if it had left without them. On the way, they encountered a wanted man named Cholan and paid him to let them leave. A few days later, they discovered the wagon had crashed near a goblin camp, but they couldn't find the people they were escorting. They agreed that it was time to venture into the cave to search for Gundren. After much fighting, the group formed an alliance with the goblin leader, who offered to help them if they could get rid of a troublesome bugbear. A deal was struck, the bugbear was dealt with, and they obtained a clue about Gundren's whereabouts.

The group continued their search and stumbled upon another cave. After overcoming an ambush, they entered the cave and immediately felt the magic within. They encountered an orc holding a young boy captive and Ielina opened fire. After freeing the boy, he thanked the group and explained he was on his way back to Phandalin. The party had to fight their way through the cave and eventually found Gundren, who was about to be sacrificed. After a fierce battle, they rescued him and made their way out of the cave.

While traveling, they met a gem merchant and sold some of their loot. However, they were shocked to discover that a whole year had passed during their time in the cave. They arrived in Phandalin to find that the Red Brand Ruffians had taken over the manor and were using it as a base for their criminal operations. The party worked to root out the bandits from the town and eventually infiltrated the manor, where they learned that Cholan was involved. They defeated a powerful magic user named Iarno Glasstaff and handed him over to the mayor. However, they soon discovered that the mayor was corrupt and had let the town deteriorate to drive people away.

The party settled in for the night, trying to make sense of the recent chaos, but they were jolted awake by news of hostile forces in the nearby mine. The townsfolk were already attempting to reclaim it, but by the time the adventurers arrived, many of them had fallen. Despite this, the townsfolk had managed to clear a significant portion of the mines. The four heroes pressed on, battling their way through until they reached the Black Spider. After a fierce struggle, they emerged victorious and recovered the mines for Phandalin. As a token of gratitude, the heroes were given the manor, which they transformed into an adventuring guild. They then journeyed back to the bustling city of Waterdeep, where their journey began, but ultimately each of them went their separate ways.
